Baldwin Brass Manufacturing

Baldwin manufacturers its door hardware out of brass due to its durability in strength and in appearance. Holding a piece of solid brass hardware in your hand instantly conveys quality. Brass is heavier and stronger than door hardware composed of aluminum or plated steel, resulting in smoother operation. The forging process requires more time and resources than the more popular casting technique where liquid metal is poured into a mold.

Brass arrives at the manufacturing facility in raw bars where it is then heated and forged by expert craftsman into its final shape. Next, it is trimmed and polished. The result is an immaculate piece of hardware that is ready to be finished. Baldwin's commitment to quality ensures it will use forged brass for years to come.

Baldwin Lustrous Finishes

Baldwin hardware has grown its catalogue to offer an impressive 21 finishes. Finishes are available to appease all tastes and décor, from clean and modern to worn and vintage. Each finish style requires a different manufacturing technique to create the perfect piece of hardware.

  • Chrome, Nickel, and Bronze are manufactured with up to 30 layers of metal plating over solid brass for maximum durability.
  • Living Finishes are aged 6 to 12 months and continually change over time to reveal a classic vintage character.

For the most reliable finish, choose a fixture with Baldwin's Lifetime PVD finish. PVD stands for physical vapor deposition, which offers a high quality finish to withstand harsher, coastal conditions. The process includes a formula of layered nickel alloys to prevent against aging and to provide resistance to corrosion from air with high salt consistency. Baldwin was the first to offer Lifetime PVD finishes for decorative hardware. Also, Baldwin is the only manufacturer that has lifetime finishes in Satin and Polished Nickel.
